As artists evolve, so will the audience. One stems from the other and it is essential that we have platforms to support this evolution. In this context, Video Wednesdays (VW) which began in July '08 as part of Gallery Espace's outreach programme was a big step in the right direction. The last Wednesday of every month since July last year was set aside for a day-long session of selected video-works. The grand finale for this movement was held on August 01.
Delhi-based critic and curator Johny ML invited 5 guest curators: Gayatri Sinha, Suresh Jayaram, Nancy Adjania, Arshiya Lokhandwala and Bose Krishnamachari to present a selection of their favourite video-works. The result was a unique experience: a viewer was able to check out sixty video-artworks which were played simultaneously in five seperate viewing sections within the gallery. Works of artists including Mithu Sen, Amar Kanwar, Sudarshan Shetty, Pushpmala N, Ranbir Kaleka, Siridevi Khandavilli and Nikhil Chopra were on view.
The grand finale also featured a symposium on video art. The panel comprised all six curators, and the discussion deliberated on the implications of the gradual shift away from traditional art forms to newer mediums such as video art for artists, collectors and enthusiasts.
Johny ML and Gallery Espace should take a bow for presenting an initiative such as VW which exposed Indian viewers to a medium that the community was largely unexposed to.
